Subcontractor

Definition:

A company or individual that, as a non-employee, provides products or services to a contractor to help fulfill their contract.

Examples:

The advertising company doesn’t keep graphic designers on staff; instead, they use subcontractors to create any artwork they need for their clients.

Before choosing the general contractor on a construction project, it’s a good idea to ask for the names of the subcontractors they will be using on the job.
