Definition:

A workers who is self-employed; these are either individuals or other businesses that provide needs outside of the operations of an organization.

Examples:

The CTO saved money by utilizing independent contractors to create the company website.

Most businesses use independent contractors for their janitorial and maintenance work, rather than keeping people on staff.
